Drying and humidity standardization of substances

Drying

  1. Weight the substance on a weighing scale, and write down the value.
  2. If possible, make a fine powder by rubbing the substance through a coarse strainer, and then with a fine strainer, to speed up the drying process.
  3. Dry the chemical with silica gel in a sealed container.
  • Use completely dried silica gel (can be heat in microwave for 5 minutes at 800W) in a sealed container, and weigh samples until they don't lose any weight, which indicates that it's completely dry.
  • Weight the substance again, and divide it with the weight in step 1, to calculate the loss of weight in percentage.

Expected loss of substances

Cannabis

  • 10-20%.

Powders

  • 40% weight from large moist lumps.
  • 50% or more from a paste.

Humidity standardization

  1. To make it simple, dry the substance first.
  2. Calculate how much water you need to add (see the below section).
  3. For small batches, pour the water in folded toilet paper, and attach the paper at the inside of a lid for a sealed container, for example, a mason jar.
  4. Add a hygrometer to the container, to monitor the relative humidity.
  5. Store until the toilet paper is dry.

How to calculate the amount of water

Add x% of the desired weight in water to y weight substance: (y+(y*x))*x

Example: To get 10% humidity for 100 g dry herb, add 11 g water: (100+(100*0.1))*0.1 = 11
