Neurological Analysis

Summary: The sense of familiarity overlaps with your sense of self in your default mode network. Your default mode network incorporates this familiarity into emotional biases towards your decision making processes. Psychedelics disrupt/turn off your default mode network.

The embodied transcendental: a Kantian perspective on neurophenomenology: "The allegedly privileged stance afforded by meditation to observe the transcendental process at work may be especially valuable for the neurophenomenological enterprise, in that it may provide specific hints for the investigation of neural processes embodying different instances and layers of the cognitive a priori endowment. This may be especially fruitful for what concerns the function of the DMN in enacting and looking out for environmental confirmation of a model of the self based on autobiographical memories"

Medial prefrontal cortex and self-referential mental activity: Relation to a default mode of brain function: "Such anatomical relationships suggest a role for these medial areas in the integration of the visceromotor aspects of emotional processing with information gathered from the internal and external environments. Some have extended this idea to suggest that the ventral MPFC plays a role in the integration of emotional and cognitive processes by incorporating emotional biasing signals or markers into decision-making processes (53–55)."

How is our self related to midline regions and the default-mode network?: "While our results indicate that the self overlaps with familiarity in MPFC and PCC, both conditions also differ from each other in the PACC. This suggests that self and familiarity cannot be regarded as identical."
