Beyond the Relief: Why Drug-Induced Psychonautics Including Entheogens Might Not Be the Quick Fix You Seek Psychonautics, the exploration of consciousness, can be a powerful springboard for igniting a curiosity about spiritual practices that lead to lasting transformation. It offers a glimpse into the vast inner landscape, but it's important to be mindful that altered states of consciousness from drugs, even those induced by entheogens, can unintentionally mask the root causes of distress. These underlying issues might be completely unknown to us, hindering our ability to address them effectively. Imagine someone grappling with migraine-like symptoms. These could be rooted in a hidden nutritional imbalance, like a magnesium deficiency often linked to processed food-heavy diets. Seeking relief, they might explore entheogens. While these experiences can induce feelings of transcendence, offering temporary reprieve, they could inadvertently mask the true source of discomfort. This could hinder them from identifying and addressing the root cause, such as dietary changes. However, it's a two-way street. It's important to remember that addressing nutritional deficiencies can also be crucial for a safe and positive experience with entheogens, as deficiencies can increase the risk of a bad trip. So the good news is that lasting depression reduction can be achieved through a holistic approach that nourishes your mind, body, and spirit, and all without needing to put yourself at risk with psychoactive drugs. This might include practices like maintaining sobriety, engaging in physical activity like brisk walks, prioritizing a balanced diet rich in nutrients, spending quality time with supportive loved ones, and limiting screen time. |
Hi there, I'm David Hedlund. I am from Sweden, a small country located in northern Europe, and have been editing PsychonautWiki since 4th April 2017, and I made my ten thousandth edit 15th December 2021.
"The ethereal and resplendent expanse of the cosmos, with its celestial bodies and harmonious movements, is a testament to the unity and equality of all creation under unconditional love. Its vastness and complexity inspire awe and wonder, inviting us to contemplate the mysteries of the universe and our place within it. As we gaze upon the expanse of heaven, we are reminded of the beauty and majesty of the divine, and the infinite possibilities that lie before us."

Did you know?
Things I consider relevant, that I added to articles:
- CBD
- Risks with inhaled CBD: Firstly: Vaped or smoked CBD heated to 250-300 C will partially be converted to THC.[1] Thus it's inconvenient to smoke or vape CBD to relieve a THC toxicity. Secondly: 50 times more CBD than THC is needed to reduce acute effects of THC,[2] which makes it practically impossible to administer proper dosage by inhalation. Also, the quantity of CBD converted into THC will increase a lot with the required ratio, and excessive harshness in the lungs may escalate a bad trip.
- Conversion of CBD to THC with citric acid and water-based extraction
- Conversion of CBD to THC with zeolite
- Near-death experience
- Ketamine#Near-death_experience (Ketamine#Transpersonal_effects), DMT#Near-death_experience (DMT#Transpersonal_effects), Salvinorin A#Near-death_experience (Salvinorin A#Transpersonal_effects)
- A 2019 large-scale study found that ketamine, Salvia divinorum, and DMT (and other classical psychedelic substances) are linked to near-death experiences.[3]
- Ketamine: People who remembered their dreams during ketamine anesthesia reported a near-death experiences when the widest possible definition of a NDE is used.[4] Ketamine can reproduce features which have commonly been associated with NDE's.(Domino et al., 1965; Rumpf ,1969; Collier, 1972; Siegel,1978, 1980,1981; Stafford, 1977; Lilly, 1978; Grinspoon and Bakalar, 1981; White, 1982; Ghoniem et al., 1985; Sputz, 1989; Jansen, 1989a,b, 1990b, 1993, 1995, 1996). A 2019 large-scale study found that most drug-induced near-death experiences were linked to ketamine.[5] Ketamine can be used to study the death (thanatology), and death-rebirth psychotherapy.[6]
- Ketamine#Near-death_experience (Ketamine#Transpersonal_effects), DMT#Near-death_experience (DMT#Transpersonal_effects), Salvinorin A#Near-death_experience (Salvinorin A#Transpersonal_effects)
- Neurogenesis
- DMT#Neurogenesis, DMT#Physical_effects: In September 2020, an in vitro and in vivo study showed that DMT present in the ayahuasca infusion promotes neurogenesis.[7]
- Psilocybin mushrooms#Neurogenesis, Psilocybin mushrooms#Physical_effects: A low dose (0.1 mg/kg) of psilocybin produced a trend toward increased neurogenesis in the mouse hippocampus 2 weeks after its administration, while a high dose (1 mg/kg) significantly decreased neurogenesis. These results suggest that the effects of psilocybin on neurogenesis are dose- and time-related.[8]
- Nicotine
- Pituri, also known as mingkulpa,[9] is a mixture of leaves and wood ash traditionally chewed as a stimulant (or, after extended use, a depressant) by Aboriginal Australians widely across the continent. At first, nicotine acts as a stimulant, boosting the production or availability of chemicals such as acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine, beta-endorphin and serotonin in the brain and other parts of the body. After sustained use, though, the body's ability to maintain heightened levels of these chemicals is temporarily exhausted and nicotine begins to act as a depressant and in high doses may induce stupor or trance.[10]
