- Psilocybin mushroom colonization: The colonization or mycelium stage of psilocybin mushroom growth contains much lower levels of the psychoactive compounds psilocybin and psilocin compared to the mature mushroom fruiting bodies. However, the mycelium can still be potent enough for medicinal or therapeutic use. The legal status of psilocybin mushrooms and their various growth stages is ambiguous and varies widely across jurisdictions. While spores and cultivation kits for these fungi are generally permitted in most nations, the legal status becomes murkier as the mushrooms mature.
