Defensive neural circuit flexibility is a key aspect for functional behavior. Fear extinction does not erase fear memories, rather it's a new form of learning. Extinction training creates extinction-specific-networks that inhibit memory-activated-threat-networks.

Hyperventilation increases panic attacks[1]
