In 2007, two seasoned executives from the fast food industry founded Smashburger. Rich Schaden was a former owner of Quiznos, and Tom Ryan had previously helped Pizza Hut develop the idea for stuffed crust pizza before serving as McDonald's chief concept officer. The two founded the company with the help of the private equity firm Consumer Capital Partners.The eatery was created as part of a trend of "better burger" restaurants that also includes Shake Shack, which uses analogous techniques, to highlight the rising demand for hamburgers. The reason the business chose the name Smashburger.
